How to prevent dogs from developing bad habits that cannot be recalled

The best way to prevent dogs from getting lost as soon as they let go in the city is to undergo recall training from a young age.

According to the laws of many countries, it is necessary to tie a dog’s leash when carrying a dog out of the house. However, if you only tie a dog’s leash without conducting recall training, a dog that accidentally breaks free from the leash and finally gains freedom will be like a kite with a broken string, making it difficult to recall. So, even if you keep tying the dog’s leash, you should still conduct recall training for the dog, just in case.

Sometimes, in order to make the dog happy, the owner takes the dog to the wild to play. What a delightful thing it is to run around in the mountains and feel the long lost freedom! However, if you have not undergone recall training, your dog is highly likely to stray from you due to momentary excitement. Recall training is one of the mandatory courses to ensure the safety of dogs.

Unit 1: Indoor special training starts with “coming over” training for dogs in the same room at home, 2-3 meters away.

Unit 2: Indoor practical training. Training Key Points:

(1) When the dog is not paying attention to its owner, such as lying on the ground in a daze or playing with its own toys, randomly train it in the previous unit.

(2) At the beginning, use the command and gesture to “come over” the dog. After successfully recalling it 3-4 times, you can start recalling it separately using the command or gesture. When training with gestures alone, if the dog does not see its owner at the beginning, it can first call its name to attract its attention, and then make a “come over” gesture.

(3) When the dog can quickly respond to the owner’s recall instructions at any time at home, it can proceed to the next unit.

Unit 3: Key points of outdoor specialized training:

(1) When starting to take your dog outdoors for recall training, be sure to choose a quiet place where there is no interference from other cats or dogs to avoid affecting the dog’s attention; At the same time, a closed area should be selected to avoid accidental loss of dogs.

(2) Release the towing rope and allow the dog to move freely for a few minutes, then recall it with a command and gesture. Reward it before allowing it to move freely.

(3) After successfully recalling 3-4 times, you can start recalling separately with a command or gesture.

(4) When the dog can quickly respond to the owner’s recall instructions in a quiet outdoor area at any time, it can enter the next unit.

(1) After basic training, during a walk, while ensuring safety, you can loosen the towing rope and allow the dog to move freely for a few minutes, then recall and continue moving forward. Repeat the process of loosening the rope – free movement – recall – forward in a moment. At this point, being able to continue moving forward is a great reward, and it may not always be necessary to reward with snacks.

(2) Two people can still stand several meters apart in a safe place. One person will first recall the dog, reward it, and then the other person will recall the dog. So repeatedly, let the dog run between the two people. Dogs will love such interactive games very much.

(3) Some breeds of dogs, such as border herders and Shiba dogs, particularly enjoy picking games and can be rewarded by playing frisbee or ball throwing games with the dog after recall.

Unit 4: Outdoor Practical Training. Training Key Points:

(1) Loosen the rope outdoors to allow the dog to move freely, and then issue a recall command when the dog is not paying attention to the owner. Reward it before allowing it to move freely.

(2) At the beginning of training, do not recall the dog when it is most excited, but rather when it is almost exhausted.

(3) After the recall, it can rest for a few seconds before moving freely. The duration of each break should change and gradually extend.

(4) Repeat the process of  “recall → reward → free”  activity  3-4 times.  After the last recall, tie the dog with a leash and reward it before taking it home.

(1) If it’s hot weather, recalling a tired dog to drink water is also a good reward.

(2) It’s best to schedule the meal time after returning home, so that hungry dogs will feel that returning home is also a good thing.

(3) If the dog does not respond immediately after the owner issues a recall command and continues to do its own thing (smell, urinate, play, etc.) as if it did not hear it, the owner should not keep repeating the command, but should immediately walk firmly and slowly in the opposite direction. Don’t worry if it doesn’t hear, because dogs have much higher auditory abilities than humans. Just like children, they often experience selective deafness.

After the dog catches up, different levels of rewards will be given according to the situation: if the reaction is slow, verbal praise will be given; If the reaction is fast, reward with “regular” snacks; If it react quickly, use “advanced” snacks as a reward. In this way, the speed of the dog’s return will become faster and faster.

Do not beat or curse your dog when it returns. Even it returns slowly. After the dog voluntarily returns to its owner, punishing it is actually punishing its behavior of ‘returning to the owner’s side‘.

If you can’t help but feel angry, just think about when you were having fun with your friends when your mother called you home for dinner. Would you go home immediately, say ‘wait a moment’, or just pretend not to hear? If there is not enough power, why demand that the dog return to you immediately every time they hear your command?
